CANON CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character Name: Mato Kuroi
Canon: Black Rock Shooter
Backstory: Here
Personality: Mato is described in the anime as 'a girl who has never hated anyone or had anyone hate her.' This emotional naivete is at the core of her character, informing all of her decisions and reactions as she navigates her way through life. She does her best to be open and friendly with everyone she meets, approaching Yomi right away with a sincere desire to be friends despite knowing nothing about her except her shared love of a children's book. This leads her to assume without thinking that the two of them will be able to get along in all facets of life, when in fact they turn out to be two very different people. When they end up coming into conflict because of this, Mato frequently becomes sad and frustrated when she can't understand why.

Because it has never occurred to Mato to treat people any other way than openly and honestly, she has never expected to be treated any other way - or for people to treat each other any other way. As such she has a rather strong sense of justice and fairness, if a rather childish and unrealistic one. She expects that all people should be able to talk out their issues and work out their problems without having to lie or hide things. As a result, once she meets Kagari and sees how she manipulates Yomi, she has a hard time processing how to deal with it. Initially she's worried Kagari hates her because of the jealous way she mistreated her to try to get her away from Yomi, but eventually this turns to indignant anger. Anger at Yomi for not standing up to Kagari, anger at Kagari's parents for letting her behave this way out of pity, and anger at herself for being unable to do anything about it.

Mato's Other Self, Black Rock Shooter, also reveals some important things about her personality. It's mentioned that she originally appeared as a reaction to Mato's desire to help others while ignoring her own pain. Grief, sorrow, and envy are emotions almost completely unknown to her, because instead of allowing herself to feel them, she focuses all her energy on helping the people around her instead. This is seen time and again throughout the anime, most prominently when she tells Yomi that she'll endure Kagari's mistreatment and hatred of her out of her strong desire to be friends. She truly wishes to believe that people are kind at heart and can understand each other, so she turns her eyes from the fact that this is not always true. She doesn't want to be hurt or to feel pain, and it's only when she enters the Otherworld that she understands that running away from these things only makes them worse for everyone.

AU INFORMATION

AU Character Name: Mato Kuroi
AU Backstory: Mato's childhood up to her first year of junior high school was rather similar to that in canon, except instead of having Yuu as a singular best friend, she was more generally popular among the girls in her class. She was on the middle school basketball team and continued on in junior high, and most of her closer friends are also members of the team. Instead of approaching Yomi out of their shared love of a children's book, she decided to talk to her when she saw that she didn't have any other friends to talk to in their homeroom class. The details concerning Yomi and Kagari are mostly the same, except that Kagari has recently come back to school, and the three are still in the middle of figuring everything out.

In this AU, the Otherworld does not exist, and Black Rock Shooter has become Mato's Persona rather than her Other Self as represented in canon. It awakened when she reached out to the Phantom Thieves for help with her situation at school. She could have dealt with the problem with Yomi and Kagari on her own, but when she was trying to figure out why they kept nearly reconciling and then getting into fights again, she realized all three of them had been talking to the school counselor about the problem. When she thought back on their conversations, some of the things she'd said to Mato that seemed comforting at the time ended up making her feel worse in the long run. Unfortunately, none of the adults would believe her story, so there was only one place left to turn.

After she contacted the Phantom Thieves, she found the Metaverse Navigator app installed on her phone, along with a private reply from the message board about how to use it. Confused at first, she decided to try it, hoping that she could convince the counselor to change and stop manipulating students. She ended up in a Palace based on a psychiatric hospital, with the counselor viewing herself as the director and having absolute power over all the patients. Mato's Persona awakened when she tried to confront her, though the experience was traumatic for her. She was terrified by Black Rock Shooter's appearance and power when she manifested, leading the Persona to rampage and resulting in the near death of the counselor's cognitive self. Mato was eventually able to regain her composure and her control, but the experience has left her nervous about using her Persona or entering the Metaverse again.

AU Personality Deviation: Without Black Rock Shooter there to absorb negative feelings for her, this Mato is less naive than her canon counterpart. She's had fights and arguments with other kids before, so she's better equipped to deal with those sorts of situations without breaking down about how unfair the world is. Her strong desire to help others remains, but she's far less of a martyr about it and is quicker to stand up for herself when she feels she's being mistreated. The frustration she felt at people not being able to be honest with each other or to talk things out is now mostly redirected toward people who actively manipulate others, and at people not believing their victims. This is due to her own experience as much as that of Yomi, and she wants to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to others. Essentially, she learned to socialize and deal with emotions earlier in the AU, and is more realistic and less childish.

Uh... 'five more minutes?'

I guess... that not everyone will always be able to get along with each other. That doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying, though.
